River Glen Piled Stone Complex, Georgia

Project Description

The Jackson County Government, Georgia, contracted Stratum Unlimited to appraise the significance of 55 piled stone features within the River Glen subdivision slated for housing development. Prior to fieldwork, Jackson County got clearance from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division and the Georgia Council on American Indian Concerns. Following three fieldwork sessions, which were funded by the Watson Brown Foundation, it was determined that the piled stone features date to the Wolfskin Phase of the Late Mississippian Lamar period (CE 1550-1670).
