Project Description
The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Walla Walla, contracted Stratum Unlimited to remove pink spray-painted graffiti from a petroglyph and pictograph panel on a flat vertical west facing side of a large boulder. The boulder is currently located within the circular-shaped Ice Harbor Indian Memorial, Walla Walla County, Washington.
Key Highlights
- Concerned that the boulder will be impacted by Lake Sacajawea in the lower Snake River, the USACE removed the boulder to its current location in 1964.
- The boulder and its imagery are significant to the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, the Nez Perce Tribe, and the Wanapum Band.
- The USACE is consulting with the American Indian groups regarding future management measures to help minimize the recurrence of graffiti at the site.
- Detailed recording of the images and their relative age differences will assist preservation, interpretation, and presentation.
